QuarkNet Master Class 2023

We are excited to host you all on our campus for the upcoming Quarknet Masterclass (Saturday March 25). Below I provide a few more details on how to get to Rice, where to park, what room were are in, and what the agenda will look like. I've added a link below to a Google Map that hopefully will help find the places in a more interactive fashion.

Our Masterclass will take place on Saturday, March 25, from 8h30 am until about 4 pm.

Registration

Registration is free but students and teachers are requested to use this form to register for the masterclass.
Teachers: make sure to reach out to Barbara Braun or me in order to receive a stipend for your attendance.

Lunch

The Physics & Astronomy department has graciously offered to cover the lunch. If you have not yet made us aware of your preference, then please contact Mary Yarbray or me before Thursday COB. We will make sure that there will be a mix of options, including vegetarian.

Parking

The best place to park will be the North Parking lot which can reach through Entrance #20 (for more parking options, see http://geurts.rice.edu/contact/campus/). We provide a limited amount of parking vouchers to those students/parents who carpool.

Location

We will use the computer lab of Duncan Hall 1020. This room is accessible from outside Duncan Hall. Campus tour 1 will be at Brockman Hall 120. Campus tours 2a,b will both be in the basement of Brockman Hall. All Brockton Hall tours are only accessible under guidance of a Rice professor or graduate student.

Agenda

The agenda involves a couple of lectures on particle physics and the analysis of real data from the LHC. We will also walk the students to a nearby lab in which we have set up an experiment in which we determine the lifetime of a muon. We will also be visiting a real physics lab!

The tentative agenda for Saturday is as follows:

  • 8h30 - 9h registration & gateway activity
  • 9h - 9h45 lecture on particle physics: what are fundamental particles?
  • 9h45 - 10h30
    • group 1 :: Campus Tour (1a): detecting real muons
    • group 2 :: How to detect particles and analyze real data from CMS?
  • 10h30- 11h15
    • group 1 :: How to detect particles and analyze real data from CMS?
    • group 2 :: Campus Tour (1b): detecting real muons
  • 11h30-1pm - Lunch/Campus Tours (2a,b)
    • Tour 2a :: group 1 :: Dr. Killian Lab
    • Tour 2b :: group 2 :: Dr. Morosan Lab
