QuarkNet Master Class 2022

We are excited to host you all on our campus for the upcoming Quarknet Masterclass (Saturday April 30). Below I provide a few more details on how to get to Rice, where to park, what room were are in, and what the agenda will look like. I've added a link below to a Google Map that hopefully will help find the places in a more interactive fashion.

Our Masterclass will take place on Saturday April 30 from 9am until about 3pm.

Lunch

The Physics & Astronomy department has graciously offered to cover the lunch. If there are specific dietary/vegetarian restrictions then now is the time to let me know. Either way, we will make sure that there will be a mix of options, including vegetarian.

What to bring

A notebook, some writing utensils, and perhaps a calculator.

Covid-19

Everyone in a classroom is required to wear masks regardless of their vaccination status, except for instructors while lecturing. We do recommend that you carry a mask with you, and err on the side of caution anytime you’re in a situation where you’re wondering whether you should wear it. https://coronavirus.rice.edu/policies

Parking

The best place to park will be the North Parking lot which can reach through Entrance #20 (for more parking options see http://geurts.rice.edu/contact/campus/). We will use the computer lab of the Duncan Hall 1020. This room is accessable from outside Duncan Hall.

Agenda

The agenda involves a couple of lectures on particle physics and the analysis of real data from the LHC. We will also walk the students to a nearby lab in which we have set up an experiment in which we determine the life time of a muon. We will also be visiting a real physics lab!

The agenda for Saturday is as follows:

9h - registration & gateway activity
9h15 - 10h - lecture on particle physics: what are fundamental particles and how do we measure them?
10h - 11h - Campus Tour (1): detecting real muons
11h - 11h45 - data analysis prep talk: how to analyze real data from the CMS detector at the LHC?
followed by an example
11h45- 12h30pm - Campus Tour (2): a physics lab (visiting the coldest place on campus)
~12h30 - Lunch (kindly provided by the Physics & Astronomy Department!)
1h15pm - 2h30pm Data analysis in groups of two
2h30pm Data Analysis Discussion
3pm - end
