QuarkNet MasterClass at Rice University 2018

We are excited to host you all on our campus for the upcoming Quarknet Masterclass (Saturday March 24). Below I provide a few more details on how to get to Rice, where to park, what room were are in, and what the agenda will look like. I've added a link below to a Google Map that hopefully will help find the places in a more interactive fashion.



Our Masterclass will take place on Saturday march 24 from 9am until 2h30pm. The Physics & Astronomy department has graciously offered to cover the lunch. So far I have heard only from Mary about possible dietary/vegetarian restrictions, so if there are any more then please let know.

The best place to park will be the North Parking lot which can reach through Entrance #20 (for more parking options see http://geurts.rice.edu/contact/campus/). We will use the computer lab in the Keith-Wiess Geological Lab building, room 130. This room is directly accessible from the south-east corner of that building, so no need at all to enter the building and go through its hallways.

The agenda is more or less anchored to a joint videoconference that we will have with other participating masterclasses in the US and Mexico in which we will present our results! I also plan to walk the students to a nearby lab in which my undergraduate class has set up an experiment in which they determine the life time of a muon. That can be fun!


With all that, the rough agenda for the day will look like this:

9am start
9h15 - 10h - a lecture on particle physics: what are fundamental particles and how do we measure them?
10h --11h - small excursion to the Physics & Astronomy lab in which the students can see an experiment in which undergraduate students try to measure the lifetime of the muon
11h-11h45. - data analysis prep talk: how to analyze real data from the CMS detector at the LHC?
Followed by an example
11h45- 1h45pm Data Analysis (and lunch at ~12h30)
1h45pm - 2pm Data Analysis Discussion
2pm-2h30 Video Conference with 3 other participating institutes
